Michael Deacon: If you're so lonely, why not just start a relationship?
Morrissey: Well, you must be true to your heart. Yes, you might pair off for companionship, but maybe the other person doesn’t want to, or sees it slightly differently. There’s always somebody who loves more than the other.
Michael Deacon: But if, as you insist, you've been single your whole life, how do you know what relationships are like?
Morrissey: You don’t need to have been down a pit to know that it’s dirty.

LI: Do you have friends whom you reproach for not giving enough away ?
Morrissey: Of course, but they're incapable of giving more. Maybe because I'm very sensitive and that they're afraid to hurt me. Maybe because I'm not devoid of a certain poetic sense and that the majority of people aren't poets. Too often, they content themselves with being there, sat in the same room as me. They don't make the effort to shine, to give. They stay there, that's all.

Andrew Male: Could The Smiths only have happened when they did?
Morrissey: Absolutely, while the rest of the world wasn't looking. That's the only way you can surprise people. You can't surprise people if your arrival is trumpeted by a record company. You have to tap them on the shoulder and catch their expression when they turn round. As I do frequently.

Morrissey: Totally. I couldn't be happier. I don't want anything to interfere with this state of dissatisfaction.

David Thomas: Isn't unhappiness, to some degree, a matter of choice?
Morrissey: I think choice has a great deal to do with it. I can't explain it more than that. It may be unconscious choice. I think it's a result of somehow being traumatized along the way and you suddenly decide upon what's best for you, i.e., staying away.

“Stop saying that you like the Smiths,” Marr said last week, “no you don’t.” Whereas the guitarist made his remarks on Twitter, restraining himself to just 76 characters, Morrissey used the blog True to You to issue 11 paragraphs of vegetarian vitriol. “I would like to, if I may, offer support to Johnny Marr who has spoken out to the media this week against...
